Roofing Ice Damage

During the colder months of the year, ice damage is extremely common on different types of roofs and can require extensive repairs. Unfortunately, ice damage can develop quickly and can affect the structural integrity of your roof. If you want to reduce the risk of ice damage in the winter, there are a few main steps to take.

Ventilate the Attic

Ventilating the attic is one of the most effective ways to prevent ice from forming on the roofing materials. You’ll need to add fans and vents to the attic to allow cool air to circulate, which will prevent the shingles or tiles from getting too cold.

Add Extra Insulation

The quality of your insulation will determine how much you can control the temperature of your roof when it’s cold outside. Adding extra insulation may be necessary to prevent the attic from getting too cold.

Install Heated Cables

Heated cables are also useful for maintaining the temperature on your roof, making it necessary to install them on the edge of the roof in a zigzag pattern. This can allow you to heat the structure without adding cool air to the interior of the building. Try to install the heated cables in advance before the temperatures drop or a winter storm arrives.

Rake the Snow

Raking the snow that settles onto the top of your roof will prevent it from freezing and forming ice. Use a roof rake to gently remove the snow without causing damage to the roofing materials. Roof rakes with wheels are known to be the easiest to use and deliver the best results.

Use Cold Air

You can target the roof by adding a box fan to the attic and aiming it at the roof to thaw out the shingles if ice starts to form. This will also prevent any leaks from forming.

By understanding how ice damage occurs, you can prepare in advance to protect your roofing structure and the condition of your home in the winter season. You can have peace of mind knowing your roof will stay in good shape in freezing temperatures.
